You're a youngster who wants to learn how to fly? Great! Happy to have you join our ranks! Flying is a lot of fun. And, there's no reason you can't start early. We have students who have started lessons as early as age 13 or 14. They just spread out the lessons & the cost over multiple years rather than cram all of their lessons into a short timespan.
If you're serious about getting in the air and getting a pilot certificate, there are lots of people, groups & programs that are happy to steer you in the right direction. Join us and we'll be your guides. And, we'll have fun doing it!
Below we list some recommended steps to point you in the right direction & get you connected to the right people and organizations. The first few steps are things you should do regardless of where you live. Then we steer you towards a few resources specific to the Tri-Valley area. (Dublin, Pleasanton, Livermore, Sunol) We then give you some advice for college and beyond.

If you're between the age of 8-17, this EAA program will get you up for a free introductory flight in a small plane. Bring a parent and a camera!
For kids 13-18, the AV8RS is a free membership for student pilots. It provides access to the extensive AOPA aviation programs, safety training & fun activities they offer.
Sign up for their newsletter, visit their hangar, then volunteer to help out. This local gem offers training and opportunities not available anywhere else in the Bay Area.
10) Be Part of the Community
Flying is a social activity. Fly-ins. Fly-outs. Monthly BBQ's. Club meetings. Plane camping. Plane maintenance. Be sure to join a club at the airport closest to you!
13) Flight School
This is where you practice your flight maneuvers, learn to be safe and rack up hours as a student pilot. There are plenty of great flight schools in the SF Bay Area.
16) Military & Civil Air
If you want to take this route to get in the air and start your career, there are several programs available to fit your needs and desires.

You're 18 or older? Then you've aged out of the Young Eagles program. But, that doesn't mean you won't get help getting in the air. This program will get your started!
11) Scholarships
Flight training is expensive. There's no doubt about that. But, there are lots of different ways to pay for it. We'll have more details for you when you join our Explorer Post.
14) Interns & Mentors
You want a career in aviation or aerospace. Internships let you get started by working directly in the type of position you want. We'll be your internship clearinghouse!
17) Earn Additional Flight Ratings
A sport or recreational pilot certificate is just the beginning. There are all sorts of skills and ratings to be earned after this first step.

Sporty's Pilot Shop has teamed up with the EAA to offer Young Eagle flyers access to free training materials and online ground school training.
This flying club is a local gem. It is the most active group of flyers at the Livermore airport. They love getting kids in the air. And, they love pilots in training! :<)
Youth can get a sailplane license as young as age 14. Introductory flights & lessons are relatively inexpensive. And, this serves as a great contrast to powered flight.
12) For Girls & Minorities
The aviation & aerospace industries are making explicit efforts to get more girls & minorities involved. Find a club that fits you then take advantage of its programs.
15) Aviation College
You're ready to make the next step. But, you still have lots of choices when it comes to aviation programs. We'll help steer you in the direction that's right for you.

Accessing LVK Airport
If you have need to drive your vehicle onto the grounds of Livermore Airport, you must first read and acknowledge the Ground Vehicle Driver Orientation Program. Only pilots and personnel have the codes to open the vehicle gates at the airport. You will need to complete the Driver Orientation Program before entering as a guest.
