TV30 Conversations - See an interview with Tom Manger and host Mel McKay as they discuss the Exploring program at the Livermore Airport.
With help from Robot Garden* makerspace, our sponsoring organization, we use the wonder and awe of aviation and aerospace to both inspire and motivate youth to explore STEM careers. We provide hands-on informal STEM learning opportunities to help reinforce lessons taught in the classrooms. We empower youth to stretch their boundaries and build confidence in their own abilities outside the classroom.
We show youth what it takes to build and maintain aircraft. We motivate them to work towards their private pilot certificate as well as more advanced ratings. We give them opportunities that they would not otherwise have.
We have hangar space at the Livermore Airport, but we need help purchasing program materials and supplies. For immediate needs, we are looking to purchase tools for plane building (rivet guns, dimplers, clecos, etc.) as well as standard shop tools for plane maintenance tasks. As soon as we obtain these tools, we have many learning activities in which area youth can participate.
Our longer term goals include building a Community STEM Center and an Aviation Makerspace at the Livermore Municipal Airport (LVK). We will bring together over a dozen local nonprofit STEM groups to better provide youth programs. And, we will enlarge our existing makerspace so youth can learn about the advanced manufacturing techniques needed for tomorrows innovations.
Your contributions are greatly appreciated!
